About Jonathan

Jonathan Garner began his horticultural studies in 1988 at Ryde School of Horticulture whilst serving as apprentice to one of Sydney’s senior and respected landscape gardeners. To further his skills and knowledge, he moved to Surrey England to work as head gardener on a private estate and to gain his city & guilds certificate in Horticulture. His studies at Merrist Wood College also provided him with the experience of involvement at Chelsea flower show and RHS Wisley Gardens.

Since returning to Australia in 1993, Jonathan has built a reputation as one of the States most skilled gardeners and knowledgeable horticulturists. His enthusiasm and respect from industry peers, saw him elected as NSW President and in 2010, the youngest appointed “Fellow’ of the Australian Institute of Horticulture. He has lectured and spoken on behalf of the AIH, Royal Botanic Gardens, TAFE colleges, Sydney in Bloom’s expert panel, Gardening Australia expo, National Trust, Garden clubs and The Landscape Contractors Association of NSW in the specialised practices of “Espalier & Plant Training”, “Pruning techniques”, “Soil management”, “Crop Protection” and “Plant Establishment practices”. His ability to explain often complex & technical information in an understandable manner has seen him host gardening talkback on ABC radio

In 2007 Jonathan had his first book published. “Dry Gardening Australia” focused on sustainable gardening from the soil up. It’s practical and responsible advice led to great reviews from the Horticultural media and made it one of the best selling gardening books of the year. Jonathan provides a unique service of training staff onsite, continuing mentoring, horticultural consulting and specialised technical services to landscape contractors, designers and garden owners.
